Piano Flat to Old Man Range
This wasn't our first 4wd trip to Old Man Range, in fact, we've done many of the other tracks and trails across Old Man and Old Woman Ranges. BUT, we'd not done the section from Piano Flat (Southland) across the regional border to Central Otago, ending up at the AA Hut (Waikaia Bush Rd). I'd heard plenty about the track and heeded the warnings about how slippery, boggy and unforgiving it can be. We had quite a long dry spell this late summer so with our friends Darryl and Cathy partnering up with us, we decided it was time to 'knock the buggar off'. Well, I can report that there were very little in the way of boggy holes and the smooth rocks were dry with plenty of grip - even the notorious section commonly called the 'staircase'. We turned back around at the AA Hut and detoured to Potters Hut (walked to the gravesite up on the hill), with the newer of the two huts providing us with shelter from the winds for a spot of lunch. Then back down the way we came, with another detour to Canton Bridge. All up, at total of 60km.
