An Arterial Blood Gas, or ABG for short, is a test that measures the blood levels of oxygen (PaO2), carbon dioxide (PaCO2), and acid-base balance (pH) in the body. It's a test that is used to assess how well oxygen is being distributed throughout the body and how well carbon dioxide is being removed. Normally, healthy lungs move oxygen into the blood and push carbon dioxide out efficiently during inhalation and exhalation. This process is referred to as Gas Exchange. The body is receiving fuel in the form of oxygen while eliminating waste in the form of carbon dioxide. If a patient has breathing problems or a disease that affects the lungs, their ABG results would be abnormal.
