1/10 Xoverland Atigun Tacoma RC Truck - best in show at Proline by the Fire 2024 by Bonards Garage

Bonards Garage Instagram at   / bonardsgarage   Full Interview: ----------------------- 1) What's your day job and what do you like to do? I am a mailman in upland California. My love to do a replica build of 1:1 trucks started when i bought my FJ Cruiser 1:1 back in 2010. I built a replica of my fj with all matching suspension, engine bay, interior, and undercarriage and mostly those parts are scratch-built since 3d printing is not available. I designed my own IFS suspension that matches my 1:1 suspension. 2) What does 'Bonard' of your Instagram title 'Bonard's Garage' mean? It is a long story…. My nickname back when I was in high school in the Philippines. From neil to bunilnil to bonardo then bonards lol 3) How did you start in the hobby? I started the hobby of scale back in 2008. My 1st kit is a Tamiya cc01 and a hi-lift tundra. I’ve been into rc since the early '90s. I met a group of scale rc nerds and that's how my fabrication skills started. I modify my current Tamiya by converting a 2-door pajero to 4-door. Fabricating scale accessories using styrene. I also learned how to braze metal and make bumpers and sliders out of steel. 4)How did you decide to start this build? I love Overlanding myself and I'm a big fan of Xoverland team from Montana. Last year I started sourcing out my parts for the Xoverland Tacoma build. The body i used is from mfab which is a 3d printed hardbody. He also makes the rear flat tray and canopy but i have to make a few changes to it since it doesn’t match the Xoverland Pcor system canopy and tray. I always source out parts from my junkyard that i collected over the years. I have a spare SCX10 chassis and decided to use it for the build. I love using RC4WD parts and their axles since it is the closest to a Toyota truck. The tires, transmission, transfer case, front and rear winch, rear shocks, and rear axles are from RC4WD. 5) Tell us about the components of this build The wheels are from Amazon since it is the closest i found to match the 1:1 wheels. The dashboard is from Knight Customs, inner foams, and roof light bar are from Proline. I used Vanquish incision shocks up front together with the ifs2 that i got from Element RC. I did modify it a little by moving the upper control mount on the chassis and making new shock towers to match the Toyota IFS. The front bumper, sliders, skidplates, and interior are all scratch-built. I also made a rear-to-hitch bar out of steel that also mounts my rear winch. I love making my sliders, bumpers, and skidplates all out of steel so i can protect the body on the trails just like the real thing. I also scratch-built the engine bay out of styrene. 6) What was the hardest part of the build? The hardest part of the build is fabricating my front bumper to match the 1:1. It's made of 22 gauge steel and solid rod. 7) What's your favorite part of the build? My favorite part of the build is the assembly because you can slowly see the progress of the build and gives me more energy to finish it. With this build my least favorite is painting since it has a lot of components. 5 drawers for the canopy, the flat tray, the canopy itself, front cab, and more. I'm really happy how everything turn out. She drives so well and moves like a real one. The truck weighs 17 lbs and i used 4 leaf springs per side on the rear and the hardest spring available for the incision coilovers up front. I used Cricut machine on some of the decals and I also home-printed the small one and the license plate. 8) What are some of the things you learned doing this project? When you are building a scale truck, a 1:1 inspiration is essential. That’s why I fell in love with doing replica builds. The closer i can get to look like the 1:1 scale the more I get excited and go all the way with the build. When i first started it i wanted a quick build that would look like Atigun. But as the build progressed, I made changes to the ifs2 suspension to look like a Toyota suspension by moving the upper control arms mount to the chassis and making new shock towers. Then i started replicating the whole engine bay using styrene plastic. Then full skidplates and exhaust to hide all the wirings. 9) What projects are you considering next? Will you undertake something this big? I have an LC75 Toyota truck that is already in the works. I also plan to build a rock crawler out of an 80-pick-up Toyota truck. For scale's sake, i would love to build all my trucks like this big.
