So I visited Chile for a couple of weeks, Arica to be precise! We hiked/jogged around 14-15 miles to a sanctuary in the middle of nowhere in Northern Chile for a religious festival. I'm not religious, but I'm usually anybody is welcome at these events lol Each year, the small remote village of Las Peñas hosts a festival which takes place first Sunday of October and December 8 of each year for 3 days; both dates are called Fiesta Grande and Fiesta Chica respectively.. People park their cars 7 miles away (At the end of the road) and hike to the village (it's the only way to get there!). At the festival, there is dancing (lots of dancing!!), food, camping and more. People can pitch a tent and stay there for 2-3 days or just visit for the day. It is said that the local people saw the virgin (Mary?) in a cliff face, so they went and built a church around it. A miracle they call it! Many local people of all ages make the long arduous trek to make a wish to the virgin. It's a gruelling hike with lots of sun exposure. Everything in the village was either carried in or walked in using horses and/or donkeys. The houses there are made of creative materials and many have thatch roofing with a layer of sand/mortar on top. For the water, many houses have pumps which pump the river water directly into the homes. -------------------- The Feast of the Virgen del Rosario de las Peñas is a popular religious celebration held in the month of October and December in the Las Peñas sanctuary, Livilcar ravine , Arica commune , in the Arica and Parinacota Region , Chile . It is estimated that at least fifty thousand people make a pilgrimage to the Santuario de las Peñas every year, the vast majority to fulfill their demands. It is known both nationally and internationally for being one of the most extreme pilgrimage routes in the world. Its complicated route goes from crossing the river through narrow wooden bridges, to walking through the narrow ravines of Livílcar, among others. The pilgrimage route is also a route. Thousands of people move to Livílcar from Arica, Iquique , Bolivia and Peru on both dates, especially on the first since it is the largest. As this festivity began when Arica was part of Peru, it is not surprising that a large part of the devotees are of that nationality. Path to the Sanctuary by the river There is no road to Las Peñas. The asphalt ends when there are still 20 kilometers to go, and that distance must be covered on foot or on the back of a mule, crossing the dry riverbed. This anticipates one of the predominant notes of the sanctuary: the penitential spirit. The walk through the valley is approximately 3.5 hours, although it also depends on the walking pace of each person. If you go during the day, it is necessary to bring sunscreen, hats, abundant liquids, and first aid supplies, and if it is at night, it is necessary to bring a flashlight and batteries. It is easy to get lost due to the complicated and irregular route, which is why it is also recommended to go near groups of people who know the way.
