Unique ways by which cyanobacteria deal with fatty acids Fatty acids are key components of biological membranes and important energy storage molecules. Their acyl moieties can also confer membrane-interacting properties to metabolites and proteins. Over the past few years, it has emerged that cyanobacteria are quite particular in what concerns fatty acid metabolism. On the one hand, there is mounting evidence that cyanobacteria are unable to beta-oxidise these energy-rich molecules. On the other, cyanobacteria can perform unique modifications on fatty acid-derived alkyl moieties. This is perhaps most evident in the exuberant decorations featured in cyanobacterial lipidic secondary metabolites. The enzymes that make these modifications can functionalize unactivated C-H bonds with extreme regio- and stereo-selectivity. This is something that synthetic chemistry struggles with and, therefore, of considerable interest for biocatalysis applications. Here, I will touch each of these topics and provide examples from our group’s research.
