Ep. 109 1/2 BONUS: MOSAIC MIRRORED STARS

Ep. 109 1/2 BONUS: MOSAIC MIRRORED STARS This video shows how I make mirrored mosaic stars five different ways for the Fourth of July. I start by spray painting the wooden star plant stake bases from Hobby Lobby with black enamel paint. It takes about a day to dry all the way . The next day, I start my first star with ball chain edging using stainless steal ball chain adhered with E6000. The E6000 shrinks as it cures and that makes grouting so much easier! Then I knock out Star #1 using mirror cut in squares to make a flowing stripe design. Then I tackle the ball chain edging for the next four. When that has cured I make Star #2 using feather cuts, which resemble an exploding firework! Star #3 is made with mirrored tempered glass. This glass is made as vase filler and sold in craft stores. This type of glass is slightly translucent as well, so the base color makes a differeence. I adhere the mirrored side down and it is very quick with no cutting! Star #4 is made with trianglular cuts and is pretty quick as well. Star #5. What can I say? You can purchase perfectly cut mirrored circles. Only I did not do that, so I nipped my own and it took a good while to shape each one. Once I had them all cut out, I took them to the grinder where they were all smoothed out. When all the pieces were finally ready, it was easy to put it all together. I grouted the stars with black sanded grout. NOTE: These plant stakes are not waterproof! The bases are wood and they will not last over time out in the elements. They can be arranged in a vase inside without water for longer life. Also - My favorites are Star #1 and #2. While I love how #5 looks, it took the longest to make and those circles are a bit tedious. Star #4 is OK with the triangles, but maybe would have been better with smaller pieces. And Star #3 was the easiest since I didn't have to cut anything. It would look brighter with a different color under the tempered glass, like white or gold.
