"I recorded this around quarter = 68-70. The MMEA required tempo is too slow. Andante non troppo lento implies moderately slow but not too slow. Even slightly faster, this work requires a lot of stamina and control. While learning, take breaks after each section to preserve your face, then gradually increase the length of the excerpts you play as you approach the audition date. Hopefully, on audition day, only excerpts will be posted! There are many varying approaches to slurred legato. Many band composers use this technique for legato, while orchestral composers use it as a bowing indication in the strings to imply a distinct space between notes (with the bow moving in the same direction). In this example, I tried the opening with slight space between notes, and in the final section, I played the notes more connected as a contrast for comparison.
