The Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth stood as perhaps the greatest height of the Polish state, and it was certainly nothing to scoff at, being one of the largest states in Europe at the time, however, this was far from its full potential. The PLC had, because of its decentralized policies, entered into a state of decline and exploitation both internally and externally by greedy magnates from within Poland, and by rivals on its border, such as Russia, Austria, and of course, Prussia. Ultimately the weight of these pressures collapsed upon Poland, and it was partitioned into extinction, but there was a final effort in the last decades of the Commonwealth to save and revitalize the state under a new constitution which would have transformed to the loosely united Commonwealth into a centralized unity kingdom with a hereditary monarch. In our world, that never came to pass, but this time...things are different.
