Steve and Keith return to Rock Island Auction Company to show us another rare firearm that most of us have never seen in the flesh. The Smith & Wesson Model 53 revolver was chambered in the now-defunct .22 Jet cartridge. At first glance, the Model 53 looks like an ordinary K-frame revolver - except for having large holes in the rear of the cylinder and small holes in the front. Developed by S&W and Remington in 1960-61, the .22 Jet spits a flat-shooting, high-velocity .22 caliber bullet out of a necked-down .357 Magnum case. So yes, there's a lotta oomph behind that little 40 to 45 grain bullet! The Model 53 also has TWO firing pins and a movable nub on the hammer face for switching between them. That's because it came with chamber inserts that let you also shoot standard .22 LR rimfire ammo for practice or general roustabout plinking. The Model 53 was also sold with an additional, dedicated .22 Long Rifle OR .22 Magnum cylinder. Model 53s were probably shot mostly with rimfire ammo because the .22 Jet is an unusually LOUD cartridge. Both the gun and the cartridge were ingenious ideas that never found a niche in the real world. When they come up for sale, Model 53s are surprisingly affordable. Prvi Partizan occasionally makes a production run of .22 Jet, so there's a chance you can even shoot the revolver with its intended ammo. If you do, Steve recommends double hearing protection. You don't have to go home & you CAN stay here! Plenty more Brownells videos to watch: http://www.brownellsvideos.com
