How to manage Keratoconus? - Dr. Elankumaran P

Keratoconus is a disease which affects the cornea of the eye. It reduces the thickness of the cornea and changes the shape of the cornea from spherical to a conical shape. It is not only thinning and change of shape it is a progressive disease, meaning it usually increases in severity with age. Normally it starts in the teens, but it can start earlier in some cases if you are diagnosed with kertoconus. And it is done with a help of a machine called Topographer or Penatcam. We also assess the severity of the keratoconus and if there is a chance to progress. If it is really progressing, we have to stop it. We have a small surgery which is called corneal collagen cross linking, also called C3R or CXL depending on which part of the world you are from. This is a minimally invasive procedure which stops the progression of keratoconus. This is first done. If keratoconus is establishes and there is some power in the eye. Along with this corneal collagen cross linking, either a laser or an Intax is used, which are ring segments that are used by the eye and therefore the power can also be corrected along with stopping of the disease. In advanced cases, we have corneal transplantation. If the early part of keratoconus, lenses and glasses are used. If it is progressing, then a corneal collagen cross linking is enough.
