We left Thailand and came to Hanoi, Vietnam in search of touring bikes, specifically large enough for a 2 meter man named Adam. This is the story of how we found and bought bikes and all the touring gear we needed, then set off towards Laos, rode 30 meters and realized that our bikes could not support the weight of our gear-major fail. We tried trouble shooting but ultimately, had to return the bikes. We found ourselves in Hanoi with every piece of touring gear but no bikes and visas that were running out. Lang, Trung Hoa, Dong Da (wetrek.vn) *Other random things: Decathalon [March & April 2023] *Tips for Hanoi, Vietnam: -haggle for anything without a price (at least half the original price is a good starting point) -ask for prices of food/drink BEFORE ordering -tap water is NOT potable (even for locals) -March-May is gross weather (grey and terrible air quality from burning season) -West Lake is disgusting and full of garbage, dead fish and human excrement (most of the lakes are) -scooter rental 200k VND/$7.80 USD/24 hr (we recommend Trang-Hanoi Motorbike (7 P. Hang But, Hang Bo, Hoan Kiem, Hanoi)) -Grab to get around (like Uber but with motorbike transport)-quick and cheap -services apartments outside of Old Quarter under $25 USD/night (cheaper rates for longer stays) -bus from the airport is easy and cheap (8000 VND/$0.31 USD)-use Google maps for stop details -buy SIM card at the airport and haggle (Viettel 135k VND/month 5Gb/day)
