Finally An Honest Video On Emperor Commodus

So you can become a member on my YouTube channel now (there’s a pun here somewhere…) Being a member means you get 30 exclusive videos, all the artwork, all my scripts, a live stream every weekend, exclusive emojis and some other stuff I probably forgot, but… it’s totally worth it. Trust me bro. Link is here:    / @briefed_mythology   Let's talk about Commodus. You might think you know him from Gladiator, and... you kind of do, and also... you don't. Commodus wasn't some unreasonably crazy, and certainly not a rival of some random gladiator. He was a reasonably crazy lunatic and a gladiator himself. Though, despite his madness, Commodus was far from the evil that Rome experienced under Caligula and Nero, and yet... also far from the greatness Rome experienced under Marcus Aurelius. Overall though, Commodus reign — or rather its horrors — are vastly overrated. Was he a monster at times? Sure, but the most interesting parts of Commodus are not the things he did (or rather didn't do) as emperor, it's more his personality and how it was forged under his stoic father Marcus Aurelius and later unraveled after Commodus was repeatedly betrayed by those closest to him. But... more in the video, and extra details in the notes below. Notes: So what I don't touch on in this video is that, during the first years of his reign — Commodus did a pretty solid job. One could also argue that pulling out of the Macromannic Wars was a smart decision, since Rome had just been ravaged by a virus and was soon hit by yet another plague and famine. That meant that a lot of Romans died, aka: Less taxes, meaning less money, meaning a decreased ability to keep the war machine going. We don't know for sure, but Commodus' decision to pull out of the war might also have been entirely sound and rational. Apart from that, I do feel like this video is pretty comprehensive. I am not sure yet if I will cover another Roman emperor or take a bit of a break from Rome and cover other histories. I would very much like to do one of videos on the likes of Oda Nobunaga, Miyamoto Musashi, Boudicca or even more contemporary people like Van Gogh and Hemingway. We shall see  — I haven't decided yet. If you have any input, let me know in the comments.
