Webinar #28 - Understanding the

RECLAIM Network Plus Webinar #28 The twenty-eighth webinar of the 'Reclaiming Forgotten Cities - Turning Cities from Vulnerable Spaces to Healthy Places for People' took place on Wednesday, 4th September 2024. The webinar was chaired by RECLAIM co-investigator, Professor Laurence Jones from the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH). This webinar included two speakers: Dr Julie Futcher, URBAN GENERATION Co-founder and Dr Thomas Kjeldsen, Senior Lecturer, University of Bath & Trustee of Bristol and Avon Rivers Trust. Dr Julie Futcher delivered a talk on "Understanding the #UrbanClimate RULES!" and Dr Thomas Kjeldsen on "Bristol and Avon Rivers Trust: Nature Based Solutions; case studies". After the talk a Q&A session was chaired by Prof Prashant Kumar from the University of Surrey. Short bio of speakers: • Dr Julie Futcher is a chartered architect and an independent consultant on sustainable urban development. Her research explores the role of London's emerging morphology in the context of climate responsive urbanism and focuses on the dynamic and interdependent influence of built form (particularly tall buildings and increasing urban density), on access to passive resources (i.e., day sunlight and ventilation), and in turn, building energy management (heating, cooling and ventilation). Her research falls at the intersection of building and urban physics, policy, building and urban climate science, and draws attention to many of the built-form outcomes which currently fall outside the broader discussion on sustainable urban development. • Thomas specialised in water resources engineering before moving to the United Kingdom. Following a year working as a consulting hydrologist, he spent a decade working as a research scientist at the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology. In 2013 he joined the University of Bath where he is researching and lectures on topics of water engineering and infrastructure resilience. He is also a Trustee of the Bristol Avon Rivers Trust working to improve water quality in the local area.
