Notre-Dane Basilica of Montreal is Montreal’s mother church and was the 1st Gothic Revival style church in Canada. It was raised to the rank of minor basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1982 and designated a National Historic site of Canada in 1989. Its religious, historical and artistic importance makes it a treasure of Quebec heritage and one of the most visited sites in Montreal. 👉🏼👉🏼Short History Montreal oldest Catholic church built in 1656 is known for its intricately designed interior which includes stained glass chronicling the history of the city. In 1657 the Roman Catholic Sulpicians arrived in Ville-Marie, now known as Montreal; six years later the seigneury of the island was vested in them. They ruled until1840. The parish they founded was dedicated to the Holy Name of Mary and the parish church of Notre-Dame was built on the site in 1672. The church served as the 1st Cathedral of the Diocese of Montreal from 1821-1822.
