The CFA Level 2 Pass Rate is Now 29% - What is Going On?

The August 2021 Level 2 CFA Exam pass rate was published recently, and just 29% of candidates were able to pass that exam. 3 months ago we were talking about how the level 2 pass rate had dropped to 40%, and how that was the 2nd lowest level 2 pass rate ever. What happened between May and August? Why were far less candidates able to pass this time around? Many of you know that The CFA institute has said that the pass rates have been lower in 2021 because of candidates being less prepared due to their exams being rescheduled. Well the August level 2 candidates experienced just as many exam deferrals and the May level 2 candidates, so that logic can't really apply between these 2 sittings. Something is going on underneath the hood here, so we're going to talk about it. Let's just point out what is likely the primary factor at play. The minimum passing score was 70%!!! This is the highest minimum passing score we have ever seen for L2, and frankly this is an extremely high mark to get over for a test as hard as the level 2 exam. Now I know this 70% MPS is an estimate put together by 300 hours.com and not actually published buy the CFA institute, but 300 hours.com uses a lot of data points to calculate these MPS estimates. We can be pretty confident in their estimates. And to go from a long term average of 63%, to 67%, and now to 70%, those are huge jumps when it comes to an exam like this. So why isn't the CFA institute saying anything about this? So again, there is no way we can assign this significant drop in the level 2 pass rate from 40% down to 29% on covid. The August L2 candidates had a similar if not identical path to their exam as the L2 candidates in May did. And if you need even more proof, look at the level 1 pass rates. They went up! from May to August. The august candidates did better, so we can't really say oh well these people had to wait even longer, or something to that effect. I have a feeling, and this is just my personal opinion, that there may be some chaos happening behind the scenes at the CFA institute. If you have an idea of something you want me to cover in depth, please let me know because I take your requests seriously. Will be back with more CFA Exam tips in a couple of weeks so please submit more questions you would like to hear answered. Love you all!
