Chestnuts Are Dropping | First Nut Harvest | Deer Love Them

The deer are hammering the Chestnuts. Dunston Chestnut orchard update for late September. Burs are starting to drop and the Georgia deer love them. Our 85 Chestnut trees are approximately 7 years old and the chestnut crop is really turning out great this year. I’m harvesting 50 or 60 nuts to cold stratify with the hopes of growing our own trees. This is our test year. I’ll grab some more for eating next time I’m at the farm. The remaining thousands can go to the deer! We are creating a habitat plan to improve the quality of food for our deer herd as well as Turkey and other critters. Habitat planning is critical early in the year to get the best results throughout the year, especially deer season. Our 180 acres in Central Georgia has much to offer, but we need more consistent and nutritious food options for our deer herd. Our full habitat plan includes prescribed burns and cutting of our timber forest, mulching of overgrowth areas, adding food plots and these fruit tree orchards. Our creek bottoms are loaded with oaks and the acorn crop is strong annually as well. With 30 foot rows between our Chestnut trees, we decided to plant rows of corn and sunflower in each row. This will provide food in August and September but also cover as for the deer. Our plan for a winter plot around the edges of the Chestnut field are on hold until this drought is over. Very dry conditions. We placed our Redneck blind on one side of the field and are excited to see what we see from that blind! Stay tuned and SUBSCRIBE to see future videos. My favorite hunting partner, my dad, enjoyed getting out to camp and enjoying some hard work, good laughs, family time, and occasionally getting a deer. When dad was no longer able to get in the woods with me, I started sharing brief videos with him. Now that dad has gone home to Heaven, I still enjoy taking the videos, but share them with YouTube and each of you. A lot of the time when speaking into the camera, I'm thinking of talking to dad! I hope you enjoy them! If you are enjoying the videos, please hit the like button and please drop me a comment, I'd love to hear from you. As of the upload of this video, we are at 419 subscribers! The Creek Rise family continues to grow. Thank you for being a part of this outdoor journey with me!
