A view of the Chicago skyline on Lake Michigan (1:20). The Chicago River (2:00); the “Skyline Queen” cruise boat docking at the corner of State Street and Wacker Drive; the world’s largest post office and Eisenhower Expressway (2:25); the Temple Church, the world’s tallest church (2:31); Marina City, at the time the world’s tallest residential apartment buildings (2:58); the Wrigley building (3:11). A taxi drives along State Street; signs for Maxwell Street (3:48), home to an open air market. The Chicago Fire Academy (4:28) on West Dakota near the O’Leary house and barn, which supposedly started the 1871 fire. The “Tongues of Flame” statue outside the academy (4:47). Firemen climb ladders and fall off the side of a building (5:18). Quinn’s Snorkel, an automatic ladder system invented by Fire Commissioner Robert J. Quinn (5:36). Lieutenant Robert Maloney explains the snorkel system. The pump room of the Ambassador Hotel (6:37); Gaslight Club on East Huron Street, the first key club in America; the original Playboy Club at 116 East Walton (6:48); the Kungsholm Restaurant; a Fred Harvey Scandanavian chain with a miniature opera and mechanical puppets (7:02). Signs for Gino’s Pizza, Bourbon Street, Domino Lounge, GoGo Girls, Catfish Row, the Velvet Swing, Pigalle, and Irvings on Rush Street, part of the nightclub district (8:31). The 3 Hussars (9:05), a restaurant in the Carriage House Hotel with a violin and cimbalom, a Hungarian percussion instrument (9:18). Buckingham Fountain, gifted by Kate Buckingham (10:11). Ginza Holiday, a 3-day festival sponsored by the Midwest Buddhist Church of Chicago (10:41). Festival souvenirs like Japanese dolls, floral displays, and sketches. Samurai sports demonstrations like aikido (11:27). Scenes from Riverview Park (12:21), the world’s largest amusement park from 1904: a water chute, a roller coaster from the Chicago World’s Fair of 1934, parachutes. The Chicago Zoological Park (15:37) with the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Fountain, and animals like the doll sheep of the Canadian Yukon, an African elephant, and Malayan Tapir. The zoo also had the country’s only inland porpoise arena (17:22). The Art Institute of Chicago (18:13), home to “A Sunday Afternoon” by Georges Seurat (18:28), “The Bedroom” by Vincent Van Gogh, and “The Red Armchair” and “Mother and Child” by Picasso. “Reclining Figure” by Henry Moore (19:01); “Shanmukha on a Peacock” (19:08); the “Ayala Altarpiece” (19:28). The Chicago Natural History Museum (19:47), with the largest collection of primitive art in the hemisphere. The Chicago Historical Society (21:04), with the anchor from the Santa Maria and a Lincoln and pioneer collection, as well as Abraham Lincoln’s death bed (21:53). The Chicago Museum of Science and Industry (22:12), with a captured German U-boat; Old Town (22:25). The host explains these two attractions will be covered in a future program.
