'The ripples of a wreck!' Loe Bar to Porthleven, Cornwall walk

In 1807, the tragic wrecking of the frigate HMS Anson on Loe Bar near Porthleven was the catalyst to change but just how far did the ripples reach? Although the vessel was not far from the shore, around 100 men drowned as they tried to swim to safety, this tragedy was witnessed by Henry Trengrouse a cabinet maker from Heston, it inspired him to design ground breaking ship-to-shore life saving inventions and set the scene for modern coastal safety. In this video we walk a three mile stretch of the south west coast path crossing Loe Bar to Porthleven. We learn more about Henry Trengrouse by taking a visit to the Museum of Cornish Life in Helston to visit their collection of his work. Loe Bar is a naturally occurring sand bank which creates a fresh water pool called Loe Pool. Fed by three sources including the River Cober, we take a look at the fascinating accounts of how the water levels have been controlled over the years to prevent flooding in Helston. We finish our story in Porthleven by taking a stroll around the Harbour that was commissioned only a few years after HMS Anson went down to provide a safe haven along this stretch of coast. Many thanks to Helston Museum of Cornish Life for allowing us to film their display about Henry Trengrouse. The standard description bit… We are Sarah and Andrew and we film our walks around Cornwall and publish on YouTube, usually weekly. Sometimes we stay in accommodation in Cornwall and upload our vlog. Sarah is fascinated by sea glass and likes to collect it so there may be the occasional sea glass video too. The channel is a hobby and we both have normal day jobs! Frequently asked questions: What camera do we use? Since December 2018 we have used: Canon Powershot G7x MkII How do I find the books you use? Most are still in print although some we pick up in charity shops and may be available on Amazon secondhand. Please refer to the video for the book titles. Every video shows the book three times. Sorry but we can’t put a link in every description. Best time of year to visit Cornwall? We love May, June for flora and fauna, July and September for spectacular scenery. What is your dog’s name? Sorry but we do not release the name of our dog, perhaps you can make up your own name for him. To embed this video please contact us. We have disabled this feature.
