Nigerian Civil War: Scenes in Lagos as Efiong Announces Surrender on Biafran Radio | January 1970

Monday, January 12th 1970. Footage of scenes in Lagos as Philip Efiong, successor to Odumegwu Ojukwu, announces the surrender of the Biafran armed forces. The capitulation of the Biafra, which as the former Eastern Region of Nigeria, seceded from the federation on May 30th 1967, came after numerous setbacks on the battlefield; the last of which was the overrunning of the provisional capital of Owerri. Residents in the then Nigerian capital city of Lagos poured into the streets and huddled around transistor radios to hear Efiong's dramatic broadcast. Chukwuemeka Ojukwu, the former Nigerian Army Lieutenant Colonel who had led the rebellion, had only days earlier fled to a then unknown destination later revealed to be the Ivory Coast. Federal military headquarters welcomed Efiong's broadcast and General Gowon ordered his field commanders to do all to give full protection to the surrendering forces. Transcript of Radio Biafra Announcer & of Philip Efiong's Words: Announcer: This is Radio Biafra. His Excellency, the Officer Adminstering the Government of the Republic of Biafra, Major General Philip Efiong, will now broadcast to the nation. Efiong: I have assumed the leadership of the government ...Throughout history, injured people have had to resort to arms in their self-defence when peaceful negotiations fail. We are no exception. We took up arms because of the sense of insecurity generated in our people by the events of 1966. We have fought in defence of that cause. I take this opportunity to congratulate officers and men of our armed forces for their gallantry and bravery which have earned them the admiration of the whole world. I thank the civil population for their steadfastness and courage in the face of overwhelming odds and privations. I am convinced now that a stop must be put to the bloodshed which is going on as a result of the war. I am also convinced that the suffering of our people must be brought to an immediate end. Our people are now disillusioned and those elements of the old government regime who have made negotiations and reconciliations impossible, have voluntarily removed themselves from our midst. I have therefore instructed an orderly disengagement of troops. I am dispatching emissaries to make contact with Nigeria's field commanders in places like Onitsha, Owerri, Awaka, Enugu and Calabar with a view to arranging an armistice. I urge General Gowon in the name of humanity to order his troops to pause while an armistice is negotiated.
