A DYING, Decaying, Dangerous, Declining Italian Mob Town | Chicago Heights, Illinois

Chicago Heights is about 26 miles south of the Chicago Loop. The town was built through blue-collar industries. Jobs were once plenty here through steel mills, chemical factories and other types of manufacturers. When Chicago Heights was first growing, the city saw a substantial amount of Italian immigrants. Overtime, the Chicago Outfit (an Italian gang) which was lead by Al Capone set up a branch in Chicago Heights. The city became a hub for alcohol sales during the prohibition era. During the great depression, the Italian Mob brought in more money to the local economy than any other industry did. Other gangs made their precense known in the city in the 1960's when public housing projects were built in the eastside of town. Chicago Heights' population peaked in 1970 before experiencing extreme decline. Today, Downtown is miserable looking and the eastside is almost completely empty.
