No. 22 North Carolina at No. 11 Duke | ACC | 2.26.23

BECOME A WBA VIP |   / womensbasketballalliance   DURHAM, N.C. – The 45 points that the UNC women's basketball team scored Sunday at Duke marked a season low for the Tar Heels, but the total proved to be enough earn an Atlantic Coast Conference win, 45-41 over No. 11 Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The lowest winning score in program history boosted No. 22 UNC to 20-9 on the season, giving Carolina its second 20-win campaign in a row. The win was UNC's sixth of the season over a top-20 team. The Tar Heels had three players – juniors Deja Kelly, Kennedy Todd-Williams and Alyssa Ustby – finish with nine points each, marking the first game this season that no one on the team has scored in double figures. Ustby led Carolina in rebounds with seven. "I don't know if that was fun for you guys to watch," UNC coach Courtney Banghart said to the assembled media afterward, "but two of the best defensive teams in the league really brought that. Great atmosphere, both Duke fans and Carolina fans, which we'd expect for a Carolina-Duke game." The game was announced as a sellout crowd of 9,314 and although there was far more Duke blue, there were plenty of "TAR! HEEL!" chants ringing through the building. "There was a lot of Carolina blue in the stands today," Banghart said. Duke's Elizabeth Balogun finished with 12 and was the only player in the game to reach double figures. The loss was the first at home this season for the Blue Devils (24-5, 14-4), who were set to claim at least a share of the ACC regular season title with a win. Coupled with UNC's win over Duke at Carmichael Arena in January, Sunday's victory gave the Tar Heels a regular-season sweep of Duke for the second year in a row. It's the first time UNC has earned back-to-back regular-season sweeps against Duke since the 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons. The Tar Heels trailed 20-16 at halftime, a season low in a half for Carolina and the first time this season UNC had been held to single-digit scoring in more than one quarter of a game. UNC scored eight points in the first quarter on 4-14 (28.6) shooting and eight again in the second (3-9, 33.3). Duke scored six in the second quarter and nine in the third. The final combined total of 86 points marked the lowest combined total in the 106-game history of the rivalry. Balogun hit a three to open the third quarter scoring (1:16 into the period) to give Duke a seven-point lead. But the Tar Heels went on a 9-0 run that ended with them up by two, 25-23, with 4:41 to play in the period. Anya Poole capped the run with back-to-back scores off turnovers, a crucial four points in her only scoring of the day. Carolina was ahead or tied for the rest of the period and the teams were evened up at 29-29 heading into the fourth. After ending the third with two Vanessa de Jesus free throws to tie the game, Duke scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter to take a 36-29 lead with just over eight minutes to play in the game. Considering that the margin was almost equal to UNC's total in both the first and second quarters, the deficit might have seemed daunting, but Carolina chipped away and did most of its damage down the stretch at the foul line. "I think our energy was amazing this game as a team and we could feel the connectedness throughout the game," said Kelly, who scored five of her nine points in the game's final 1:16. "Even when we were down we were still like 'Y'all, we're good, the biggest thing is we've got to stay together.' I think that's what it came down to down the stretch, and then we just made some really big plays on both ends of the floors." Ustby hit a second-chance jumper with 6:36 to play to make it a five-point game, then neither team scored for the next three minutes. UNC still trailed by five with 3:35 to play when freshman Paulina Paris stepped to the line to hit four foul shots in a 29-second span and pull Carolina within one, 36-35 with 3:06 to play. After a Duke score again made it a three-point margin, Todd-Williams hit a three – one of just three all day for UNC – to tie the game and Carolina never trailed again. She hit two more free throws, and Kelly completed a three-point play and then made two more free throws with 13 seconds remaining to seal the win. UNC was 9-9 from the line in the fourth quarter, 12-15 for the day. Carolina finished with 15 steals, its second-highest total in ACC play this year. At the same time, the Tar Heels turned the ball over 21 times, equal to the second-highest total of the season and just the third time this season they've given the ball up more than 20 times. Next up for the Tar Heels, who finished ACC play 11-7, is the ACC Tournament this week in Greensboro, N.C. The tournament bracket will be announced on Sunday evening.
