(29 Feb 2012) HEADLINE: Japan's disaster hitting automakers --------------------------------------- CAPTION: The disaster in Japan is causing major problems for automakers around the world. General Motors has closed down a U.S. plant, Toyota is still shut down in Japan and Nissan is having to test vehicles for radioactive materials. (March 18) ---------------------------------------- [LOCATION: DETROIT, MI---March 18, 2011] [SOURCE: AP] [VOICE-OVER] THE DISASTER IN JAPAN IS CAUSING MAJOR PROBLEMS FOR AUTOMAKERS..ALREADY, TOYOTA HAS STOPPED PRODUCTION UNTIL AT LEAST NEXT WEEK IN JAPAN..THOUGH, NEARLY 70 PERCENT OF VEHICLES SOLD IN THE U.S. ARE NORTH AMERICAN MADE..EXCEPT THE NEW PRIUS HYBRID WHICH IS ASSEMBLED IN JAPAN AND WITH HIGH GAS PRICES IN AMERICAS THAT COULD HURT SALES FOR TOYOTA. SOME DEALERS ARE ALREADY TAKING ADVANTAGE OF EXPECTED SHORTAGES TO RAISE PRICES. [SOT: SEAN MCALINDEN / CHIEF ECONOMIST / CENTER FOR AUTOMATIVE RESEARCH] "YOU GOING TO SEE A PRICE SPIKE, CERTAINLY WITH THE POPULAR MODELS." [NATSOT: FLINT,MICHIGAN, JANUARY 27, 2011] [VOICE-OVER] GENERAL MOTORS HAS TEMPORARILY SHUT DOWN A TRUCK PLANT IN LOUISIANA BECAUSE THEY COULD NOT GET ENOUGH JAPANESE-MADE PARTS.. [NATSOT: FLINT,MICHIGAN, JANUARY 27, 2011] PRODUCTION AT FORD MOTOR HAS NOT BEEN EFFECTED YET AND COMPANY EXECUTIVES SEEM TO HAVE A VERY CLOSE WATCH ON THE SITUATION.. [SOT: MARK FIELDS / FORD PRESIDENT OF THE AMERICAS] "We have had no production disruptions as of yet but we are going to continue to monitor, continue to work with our suppliers and minimize any impact on our operations and I think the whole industry will be doing that..This is a situation that will play itself out literally over the next days and weeks." [NATSOT: FLINT,MICHIGAN, JANUARY 27, 2011] [VOICE-OVER] SHUTDOWNS WILL BECOME MORE COMMON IN THE WEEKS AHEAD..THE REASON IS THE LACK OF PARTS FROM SUPPLIERS IN JAPAN AND WITH ROLLING BLACKOUTS AND DESTRUCTION, ITS HARD TO GET THINGS MOVING.. NEARLY EVERY VEHICE IN THE WORLD HAS AT LEAST ONE JAPAN MADE AUTO PART. [NATSOT: WAYNE, MICHIGAN, MARCH 17, 2011] [VOICE-OVER] ONE EXAMPLE IS THE ELECTRONICS THAT GO INTO DASHBOARDS DISPLAYS. MANY ARE MADE IN JAPAN.. [NATSOT: FLINT,MICHIGAN, JANUARY 27, 2011] [VOICE-OVER] A GENERAL MOTORS SPOKERSPERSON TELLS ASSOCIATED PRESS THAT MORE SHUT DOWN ANNOUNCEMENTS MAY COME AS EARLY AS MONDAY. [SOT: SEAN MCALINDEN / CHIEF ECONOMIST / CENTER FOR AUTOMATIVE RESEARCH] "You could see a terrific spike in unemployment in the United States because of the very large multiplier we have for automotive production." [VOICE-OVER] AND NEWS FROM JAPAN THAT NISSAN HAS INITIATED THE MONITORING OF VEHICLES MADE IN THERE PLANTS FOR ANY TRACES OF RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL. [NATSOT: FILE FROM JAPAN] [VOICE-OVER] PUTTING THIS ALL IN PERSPECTIVE..EVERY DAY, ABOUT 285,000 VEHICLES ARE BUILT WORLDWIDE, 15% OF THOSE IN JAPAN. AND THE AUTO PARTS THAT ARE IN DEMAND ARE NOT EXACTLY EASY TO COME BY, MOST COMING FROM JAPAN ARE SOPHISTICATED ELECTRONICS, NOT, LUG NUTS AND TIRES THAT COULD BE PRODUCED NEARLY ANYWHERE.. [SOT: SEAN MCALINDEN / CHIEF ECONOMIST / CENTER FOR AUTOMATIVE RESEARCH] "There is just no built up reserve except what might be on a ship coming over and many of these electronic parts, I am afraid are flown here." [VOICE-OVER] THIS IS A FLUID SITUATION AND THE BUSINESS IMPACT WILL BE SEEN IN THE WEEKS TO COME.
