Optical Properties of Nanomaterials 05: Rayleigh scattering II

Lecture by Nicolas Vogel. This course gives an introduction to the optical properties of different nanomaterials. We derive fundamental relations describing the interactions between materials and electromagnetic radiation and discuss the resulting optical properties for dielectric, metallic and semiconducting particles. This chapter is the second part of our discussion on Rayleight scattering. We recapitulate the fundamental physics and steps involved in Rayleigh scattering and for the derivation of the famous wavelength dependence. We then discuss different examples of Rayleigh scattering and extend the formulas to include material properties and size-dependence of the scatterer.
