Winter Barley: Why, Where, and How

Presentation by Dr. Kevin Smith, University of Minnesota, at the 2024 Barley Improvement Conference Most barley produced in the US is spring-sown and concentrated in North Dakota, Montana, and Idaho. Winter barley could be produced across a broad geographic area and deliver benefits to producers, maltsters, and brewers, provide ecosystem services, and improve the resilience of barley production. This presentation will examine the potential of winter barley production in terms of agronomic performance and sustainable cropping systems. It will draw from data collected from spring barley and winter barley regional trials covering 15 states over the past 10 years.
