Muralto Muralto has an area, as of 1997, of 0.6 square kilometers (0.23 sq mi). Of this area, 0.43 km2 (0.17 sq mi), or 71.7% is used for agricultural purposes, while 0.02 km2 (0.0077 sq mi) or 3.3% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.56 km2 (0.22 sq mi), or 93.3% is settled (buildings or roads) and 0.01 km2 (2.5 acres) or 1.7% is unproductive land. Of the built-up area, housing and buildings made up 68.3% and transportation infrastructure made up 18.3%. while parks, green belts, and sports fields made up 6.7%. Out of the forested land, 1.7% of the total land area is heavily forested and 1.7% is covered with orchards or small clusters of trees. Of the agricultural land, 1.7% is used for growing crops, while 1.7% is used for orchards or vine crops and 68.3% is used for alpine pastures. The municipality is located in the Locarno district, in the agglomeration of Locarno. It lies along Lake Maggiore and is bordered by the Ramogna and Rabissale streams.
