It can sit on a desk and illuminate your working area, clip to your belt to provide walking light, clip to a backpack strap on the trail, etc. The versatility is endless with this light. It has 3 basic modes (low, medium and high) as well as two flashing modes (strobe and sos). The high mode is rated at 87 lumens, Runtime is good, getting close to 1.5 hours on a standard AA alkaline in my own testing on high. The medium and low modes will run for much longer. The beam is a combo of both throw and spill, excellent beam in my opinion. I did have a problem with the pocket clip breaking when I tried removing the clip from the light.
