The first chief was named Somerled , and his sons succeeded to his title and lands. He is said by the traditions of the family to have derived his origin from, Conn of the hundred battles, to whom is assigned by some an Irish, by others a Norwegian origin. If the latter is correct, they in all probability belonged to the race of Norwegian pirates, who acquired great power in Argyle and the Western Isles. The tradition, however, which assigns to them a Pictish origin seems to be the better confirmed, as Somerled is said to have been engaged in war with the Norwegian pirates, to have driven them from the lands they had taken possession of, and added them to his own. The power of the Norwegians, however, was still unbroken, and they ultimately acquired such power as to hold sovereign sway in the Isles. Somerled finding himself unable to cope with the Norwegians, succeeded in obtaining by stratagem the hand of the daughter of Olaf, the Norwegian King of the Isles, and thus ultimately acquired by policy that power which he could not obtain by force of arms. He had three sons, one of whom held regal sway in the Western Isles. The Macdonalds were formally the most powerful clan, next to the clan Campbell, in the Highlands. Their power, however, was ultimately broken by Malcolm IV. , King of Scotland, and their territory added to his dominions, after which the clan held their lands as vassals of the Crown.
