Ghosts of the 505

On July 3, 1927, Maine Central locomotive number 505 exploded while helping get a train up through Crawford Notch the Mountain Division in New Hampshire. Engineer Robert Morse and Fireman Oscar Clemons both died from injuries sustained in the wreck, and the locomotive was scrapped. This song, with lyrics by Ben "Gitty" Baker and a tune adapted from the old Irish traditional song “Brennan On the Moor”, is performed Ben’s Band Eastwood Station. It tells the story of that fateful day in 1927 with song, video and historic photos. In writing the lyrics, Ben strove to stay as close as possible to the historical account of the event as recorded by railroad historians. Buy the track at https://EastwoodStation.com We would like to thank Dave & Rhonda Swirk and the Conway Scenic Railroad for access to its North Conway Roundhouse, and locomotive 501 (sister of the 505) for filming. We also want to thank Scotty Mallett for his work preserving the history of this wreck as well as providing historic photos; Brian Solomon for facilitating our filming and providing historical context; Jerry Kelley for allowing Ben to ride along in the Hi-Rail truck to visit the memorial site; Cory Fothergill for providing context and details and allowing us to ride in the cab of F7 diesel No. 4266 across the Frankenstein Trestle; and every other individual and group who has helped to preserve the history of the wreck of the 505, the Mountain Division and the Maine Central. All video clips used in this production were filmed by Ben “Gitty” Baker. Historic photos were provided by Scotty Mallett and local history sites, and are re-used here for educational purposes. All new material in this video is Copyright 2022 by Eastwood Station.
