Do you know how to use communication apps? As we’re trying to keep safe during these difficult times by social distancing, it’s necessary that you, and the seniors in your life, rely on modern methods of #communication. Teach the seniors in your life to try these easy-to-use communication apps, like FaceTime, Facebook Messenger, Zoom, and Skype. I’m old enough to remember when phones could only help you talk to other people. Now you can easily conduct video chats. To talk to my daughter using FaceTime, all I have to do is find her contact on my iPhone and click on the little camera, and I can video chat with her just like that, easy-peasy, even though she’s thousands of miles away. JH: Like Facebook Messenger, Zoom, and Skype, you can use FaceTime to video chat with multiple people, such as an online family reunion. It’s extremely simple to use, but FaceTime only works on Apple products like iPhones and iPads. Another easy-to-use app is Facebook Messenger, which works between people on Facebook. Getting a Facebook account is free, but someone may need to help the senior set up Facebook Messenger on their smartphone, Mac, or Windows 10 computer. Once it’s working, you can use it to video call groups of up to 50 people for free. Another popular video calling app is Zoom, which is exploding in usage due to quarantining. You can Zoom to and from phones or computers for free without any special software. You could use a Zoom app, or just join a meeting through a web browser like Chrome. Finally, Skype from Microsoft is also popular. It’s free for computer-to-computer calls but calling smartphones costs $3 a month. Besides socializing and seeing grandbabies in their crib, seniors can also use these tools to connect with health professionals who otherwise couldn’t see what’s going on with their patients without a face-to-face meeting, So these apps aren’t just good for catching up and spreading joy; they actually save lives. Of course, if you or your beloved senior wants to use a computer to communicate, make sure it has a microphone and camera. If they’re not built-in, you can easily have a combination unit shipped that should connect very simply through a USB port.
