The United States isn’t fighting a war or a recession. So, why is national debt skyrocketing? The lingering economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic combined with increased congressional spending have pushed the national debt to levels not seen since World War II. Economists worry that the growing debt could limit other spending priorities and, at worst, restrict Washington’s ability to borrow should another crisis occur.
