In this episode of my series “ Walks in Hampshire”, I take a 4.5 mile “circular” walk (with a big detour into Berkshire, bringing the total distance up to at least 8 miles!) from the village of East Woodhay to East End. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan. I park my car at St Martins Church in East Woodhay and after a quick look around the church itself, I head West along a quite road before heading South along a bridleway. The bridleway eventually becomes a footpath that goes up a very steep ridge (!). The climb to the top of the ridge is worth it though for the views to the North. I join the Wayfarer's Way and head West towards Walbury Hill – the highest point in Berkshire. The footpath goes through the middle of an Iron Age Hill Fort on top of Walbury Hill and I continue on to Gallows Down and the Combe Gibbet. The gibbet was initially erected in 1676 for the purpose of gibbeting the bodies of murderers George Broomham & Dorothy Newman. The gibbet also marks the start of the Test Way – a 44 miles long distance path that finishes at Eling near Southampton. I then retrace my steps along Wayfarer's Way, past Pilot Hill (the highest point in Hampshire) until I come across the Brenda Parker Way (long distance path). This is where I head North and downhill to the village of East End. After a short wander around East End, I follow the quiet country lane back to my car at East Woodhay. Map courtesy of Google Maps.
