What Are the Results of Sclerotherapy Treatment?

What are the results of sclerotherapy treatment? In this video, Aubrey Harman, A.R.N.P., a board-certified nurse practitioner at Vascular Specialists of Central Florida, tells you what you should be prepared for and all you need to know about the results of the treatment. “Immediately after sclerotherapy you shouldn't have any pain,” says Ms. Harman. “Some people have a little bit of tenderness after the procedure, and you might have what looks like little ant bites where the needle went in. The veins themselves that were injected, they might look a little red and irritated. The veins are not invisible after the procedure, and you will still see the vein. It will be red, a little bit irritated, and that's all very normal. You may also have some bruising. Some people bruise from sclerotherapy, and some do not. We do recommend arnica gel, which you can purchase in advance of sclerotherapy. You can even bring it with you to put on the site, and that can lessen the severity of bruising, especially if you know that you bruise easily.” “The small, raised areas where the needle went in, those go away very quickly, usually by the next day. The bruising will resolve fairly quickly as well. About a week or two after the procedure, all of the inflammation is gone, and then just give it another couple of weeks to see how the spider veins resolve. Again, there shouldn't be any pain per se after the procedure other than some tenderness where the injections were performed.” “We do recommend that you bring compression stockings with you to the procedure. If you don't have compression stockings, we can talk about where to get them, and even write a prescription for you that may be reimbursable through your insurance company. You want to bring compression stockings that will cover the spider veins that we're going to inject. If you only have spider veins on your calf or the spider veins on your calf are the only veins that you wish to have injected, then you only need to bring calf-high compression stockings.” “But if the spider veins do extend into the thigh area, you’ll want to bring either thigh-highs or pantyhose. Compression stockings have been shown to enhance the cosmetic satisfaction after sclerotherapy. In the studies they've done on large groups of people having sclerotherapy, those who have worn compression stockings afterward tend to be happier with their results. You may get a satisfactory result after sclerotherapy not wearing compression stockings, but statistically speaking, if you wear compression stockings you're more likely to be happy with your result. We recommend that you wear compression stockings for three days and three nights after the procedure, and then as much as possible for two to three weeks during the day.” “It's also advisable to stay out of very hot, steamy showers for a week or two after the procedure — saunas, any hot water, which can encourage the veins to dilate and open up. Staying out of the sun is also recommended for a week or two, as the sun can darken the sclerotherapy sites. So if you have a trip to the beach planned or a cruise, or something like that, you might want not to have your sclerotherapy done right before that time.” For more visit http://www.arteryandvein.com/ To learn more about Aubrey Harman, A.R.N.P., visit https://arteryandvein.com/aubrey-harm...
