Egypt explores purchasing HQ-17AE air defense system from China

Egypt is exploring the purchase of the HQ-17AE air defense system from China, which will be featured at Airshow China 2022. Talks with the Chinese side will take place, the Tactical Report reported. The relationship between Egypt and China is not the first time. The two countries have established diplomatic relations for 62 years. The HQ-17AE is an export variant of the HQ-17 short-range all-weather surface-to-air missile defense system. This system is designed and manufactured by China Precision Machinery Import-Export Corporation (CPMIEC). The HQ-17 is based on a tracked chassis. Whereas the HQ-17A is based on a 6X6 truck chassis. This system was displayed at the 2019 military parade. HQ-17A is equipped with a missile launch station and radar system. The system carries a total of 16 vertically launched missiles. The HQ-17A missile has a firing range of up to 15 km and a maximum altitude of 10 km. The system can be used to detect, track and destroy aerial targets such as aircraft, helicopters, UAVs, cruise missiles and precision-guided munitions.
