5 Days of Backpacking Goat Rocks Wilderness with Sierra Club Outings | Hiking in Washington State

Welcome to our 5-day backpacking adventure in the stunning Goat Rocks Wilderness, one of Washington State's most breathtaking natural treasures! Nestled within the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, this wilderness area is renowned for its rugged beauty, diverse ecosystems, and, of course, the iconic Goat Rocks themselves. The region offers a unique blend of alpine lakes, towering peaks, and vibrant meadows filled with wildflowers, making it a paradise for hikers and nature lovers. Day 1: We begin at the Clear Creek Trailhead, setting the stage for our adventure. The first day features a hike of just under 6 miles, with a challenging 2,300-foot elevation gain that leads us to our campsite near the tranquil Lost Hat Lake. Enjoy views of the lush forest and rugged terrain as we make our way to our first night under the stars. Day 2: Our second day starts with a short but steep ascent of about 800 feet to the crest of Coal Creek Mountain, where we are rewarded with breathtaking views of Mt. Rainier, just 20 miles to the northwest. After soaking in the scenery, we descend towards Lost Lake, followed by a gradual climb along the Coyote Trail to our beautiful campsite near Beaver Bill Creek. Total mileage for this day is around 4.5 miles, packed with stunning vistas and unique wildlife sightings. Day 3: We encounter a setback when we discover a washout on the Coyote Trail. Safety is our priority, so we decide to take a layover day at Beaver Bill Creek. Join us as we take this opportunity to relax, explore the nearby area, and enjoy a breathtaking sunset that paints the sky in hues of orange and purple—perfect for photographers and nature lovers alike. Day 4: Refreshed from our rest day, we set off to Coyote Lake. The hike offers a mix of terrains and continues to showcase the pristine beauty of the wilderness. As we reach the lake, we set up camp and take the time to unwind, surrounded by nature's tranquility. Day 5: Our final day involves a hike back out, retracing our steps and reflecting on the memories we've created. We discuss the challenges we faced, the beauty we witnessed, and the camaraderie that made this trip unforgettable. 0:00 Intro 0:18 Day 1 Hike 4:39 Lost Hat Lake 6:37 Day 2 Hike 8:50 Panoramic Views 10:40 Horses 11:05 Day 2 Hike 12:45 Lost Lake Lunch Break 13:33 Blowdowns 14:43 Beaver Bill Creek 15:00 Day 3 Hike 16:27 Dangerous Section 17:14 Sunset 17:32 Day 4 Hike 21:05 Panoramic Views 23:27 Coyote Lake 23:52 Day 5 Hike Out Videos were shot on a GoPro Hero 12 Black in 4k resolution at 60 fps with 10-bit color and 60 Mbps, using the Linear Horizon Lock mode.
