Unrivaled basketball league strikes media rights deal with TNT Sports

TNT Sports has forged a groundbreaking multi-year partnership with Unrivaled Basketball, a newly formed offseason 3-on-3 women’s league created by WNBA superstars Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier. This media rights deal, involving Warner Bros., will ensure wide-reaching exposure for the league by broadcasting more than 45 games starting in January 2025. As part of the agreement, games will be aired in prime time on three nights each week: Mondays and Fridays on TNT, and Saturdays on truTV. The collaboration goes beyond broadcasting rights, with TNT Sports also becoming a financial stakeholder in the league, underscoring their commitment to growing the league’s profile. Unrivaled Basketball has already attracted a roster packed with talent, featuring standout WNBA players like Arike Ogunbowale, Jewell Loyd, Kelsey Plum, Brittney Griner, Angel Reese, and Chelsea Gray, as well as Paige Bueckers from UConn. With 26 out of 30 players confirmed so far, the participation of other prominent figures such as WNBA MVP A'ja Wilson and NCAA sensation Caitlin Clark remains undecided. The season will run from January 17 to March 17, 2025, with all games taking place on a specially designed 70-foot court in Miami. The innovative format features six teams, each composed of five players, competing in 14 games per team. The structure includes three 7-minute quarters and a fast-paced final quarter, where the game ends once a team reaches 15 points. An 18-second shot clock will add further intensity to the games. The season will culminate in a single-elimination Final Four, crowning the champion. Fans can also look forward to a midseason All-Star event on February 10, which will feature a unique one-on-one tournament involving all 30 league players. The victor of this contest will walk away with a significant $250,000 prize. One of the league's most attractive features is its lucrative compensation package. Players will earn a minimum salary of $100,000 for the season, making Unrivaled Basketball one of the highest-paying professional women’s team sports leagues in the United States. The league's total player compensation pool is expected to be around $3 million. The investor roster behind Unrivaled is equally impressive, with sports icons such as soccer stars Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe, retired NBA greats Carmelo Anthony and Steve Nash, LPGA golfer Michelle Wie West, and UConn’s legendary basketball coach Geno Auriemma among its backers. Even actor Ashton Kutcher has joined this stellar group of supporters. This venture also addresses a significant issue for WNBA players: scheduling conflicts with the league’s mandatory training camps, which were complicated by the recently implemented "prioritization clause." This rule, introduced in the latest WNBA collective bargaining agreement, mandates players to be present at the start of training camp or face season-long suspensions. The creation of Unrivaled provides players a high-quality domestic alternative to competing overseas during the offseason, thereby sidestepping the training camp dilemma. The concept of Unrivaled was first publicly unveiled by Stewart and Collier during the 2023 WNBA All-Star Weekend, setting the stage for an exciting new chapter in women’s basketball. The league is poised to attract significant attention, offering fans a thrilling, fast-paced basketball experience while empowering the top athletes in the sport with competitive salaries and prime exposure.
