Get to know more about China through "Historic Journey of China Bit by Bit", you may check out the playlist:    • Historic Journey of China Bit by Bit   South of the Tianshan Mountains in Xinjiang, in the city of Korla, stands a monument to the 18th Regiment Canal. The copper statue depicts one of the countless soldiers who helped develop this border area. On September the 25th, 1949, under the command of General Wang Zhen, the First Corps of the PLA, liberated Xinjiang. An order issued in the name of the Xinjiang Military Region stated that: "Every soldier should participate in production. No one is excused labour." In response, the army in Xinjiang entered a new battle; gun in one hand and shovel in the other. Only a single division was left to defend the border. Campaign maps became production plans, artillery aiming sights became theodolites, war horses became work horses, and stirrups were turned into ploughshares. In all, more than 100,000 soldiers joined this vigorous production movement, north and south of the Tianshan Mountains. In October 1954, the central government established the PLA Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps. In vast numbers, outstanding young people, demobilized soldiers, intellectuals and scientists from all over China joined the corps. Determined to help develop Xinjiang, they braved the adverse weather conditions. They would go on to make a lasting contribution not only to the region’s development, but also to its unity and social stability, and to the nation’s defence.
