The origin of the anterior belly of the digastric muscle is found at the digastric fossa of mandible, while the posterior belly of the digastric muscle has its origin at the mastoid notch of temporal bone. Together they both find their insertion on a intermediate tendon, attached to the hyoid bone. One particular feature of the digastric is that both bellies have different embryological origins. The anterior belly of the digastric muscle derives from the 1st pharyngeal arch and is therefore innervated by a branch of the mandibular nerve (mylohyoid nerve). In contrast the posterior belly of the digastric muscle arises from the 2nd pharyngeal arch, which is why its nerve supply comes from the facial nerve. 0:07 Introduction to the digastric muscle 0:47 Anterior belly of the digastric muscle (Origin, Insertion, Innervation) 1:17 Posterior belly of the digastric muscle (Origin, Insertion, Innervation) 1:54 Functions of the digastric muscle Want to test your knowledge on the digastric muscle, and other muscles of the neck?
