Chittaranjan Locomotive Works Sets World Record & Produces Hospital Beds

Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW) India’s premier locomotive manufacturer is also the world’s largest locomotive manufacturing unit, and produced 402 locos in FY 2018-19. This has been recognized by Limca Book of Records as World Record. It had been producing most of the passenger and freight locos. Production has witnessed a jump of 75% over the last 6 yrs from 250 in 2014-15 to 431 in 2019-20 to support 100% Electrification and Make in India It surpassed its own world record by producing 431 locomotives in FY 2019-20. This was achieved despite COVID-19 restrictions creating disruptions at the fag end of the financial year. In order has diverted its efforts towards producing hospital beds and other equipment in the fight against COVID-19. CLW has started producing the hospital beds and shelves as per medical standards. These are to be supplied to the nearby K G Hospital to create emergency quarantine facilities for COVID-19 patients. To start with, CLW has produced 35 beds and 50 side-drawers for the hospital. Several units of Indian Railways have begun efforts to prepare for a possible surge in COVID-19 patients. Carriage and Wagon workshops in various zones have started work to modify hundreds of coaches for use as isolation wards for COVID-19 patients. These coaches can be moved to various locations as per requirement, especially in remote areas with low capacity health facilities.
