How To Use Horror In Your Dungeons

Today I'm going to be talking about introducing elements of horror into your D&D campaign, and specifically into your dungeons. And the inspiration for this video came from two sources; Bandit's Keep's recent video in which he goes over the sample dungeon in the third book of the boxed set, and from my recent series on the Dungeon of the Mad Mage. The history of a dungeon is a tremendous source of horror elements. And the two elements here that you want to consider is its original purpose and current state. Think about the history of dungeons in the real world. These were terrifying places; there are countless stories from ancient and medieval times of people being thrown into a dungeon, chained to a wall and basically left to either starve to death or go mad. You could have prisoners pitted against each other for their captor's amusement. And these captives could be an array of humanoids and monsters, and the prison guards could include this host of fantastical creatures. Next you have the current state of a dungeon; that is, when the players come across it. this original history can be used to stamp a dungeon as a place of horror. I mentioned the terrors of a medieval prison. What sort of ghosts linger in the torture rooms, or the pits where prisoners were tossed inside to die? And you can see the cross referencing of dungeon purpose and current state how the horrific can ensue. Let's say a temple which in itself was a place of sacrifice and torture, and which was then the site of some kind of catastrophic magical disaster. Or the tomb of some tyrant, slain by his own people as penance for their complicity in his crimes, and now his last resting place is cursed by the gods and shunned. So next we'll cover the geography of a dungeon, which as I said is both its structural elements and the physical atmosphere within. And these are a by product of the history and current state of the dungeon. The structure of a prison contains the cells and torture areas; when the players come across various torture devices there's a real opportunity to create an atmosphere of horror and disgust. An evil temple may have blood letting rooms or sacrifice pits, a tomb may have chambers where unfortunates were sealed inside to accompany the buried personage to the next world, or to punish them for some offense. What all of these examples give you is fuel to create a horrific atmosphere. And what you can have here is what I call “creeping dread”. This is a feeling of deep unease that over-comes the players as they move further inside a horrific environment. And this brings us to our last category; the denizens of a horrific dungeon. Now the obvious examples are undead; ghosts of those who perished in a prison or were sacrificed or killed in some conflagration. You could have humanoids or sentient monsters that have fallen prey to the creeping dread affect or a plague with a similar outcome and are hopelessly insane. And they don't have to just attack the group or crave the taste of flesh. They could be semi-catatonic, on their last legs, and give the players some cryptic information about the dread effect and a possible cure. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Here is the link to the Bandit's Keep video I talked about:    • What we can learn from the original D...   xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Here are some of the products you can use to start playing D&D and create your own homebrewed campaign.
