Needle Aspiration of a Pneumothorax

This video demonstrates the use of a syringe and needle to aspirate a small to moderate size pneumothorax. We used a lumbar puncture tray and needle to do the procedure because we did not have a formal system set up for this procedure. In fact, this was our first attempt at a needle aspiration of a pneumothorax because chest tubes have been our standard approach. However, our patient was adamantly opposed to a formal chest tube and we were more than willing to try the British Thoracic Society recommendations for needle aspiration of the air.
