Having a zinc deficiency can lead to low testosterone - low levels of zinc are associated with lower levels of testosterone as low zinc leads to an increase in estrogen receptors and a decrease in androgen receptors Zinc is also necessary for the conversion of androstenedione to testosterone and low levels may also increase the aromatization of T to estrogen However, zinc also has an effect on SHBG: In addition to binding sex steroids, SHBG has specific binding sites for divalent cations including calcium and zinc Zinc binding to a site at the entrance of the steroid-binding pocket in human SHBG has been shown to reduce its affinity for estrogens, while having no impact on the binding of C19 steroids *C19-steroids are androgen receptor modulators https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1... Study - Vitamin D and Testosterone A study from The European Journal of Endocrinology looked at vitamin D and its effect on hormone levels - European population of 3051 men aged 40 to 79 Researchers found that men with vitamin D deficiency had significantly lower levels of free testosterone and higher levels of oestradiol - also had a higher BMI, had poorer physical function, and were more depressed - also had higher rates of cardiovascular disease Conversely, the men with the highest levels of vitamin D had the highest T levels, better body composition, and better overall health vitamin D levels improve hormone production due to there being vitamin D receptors in the hypothalamus and pituitary glands which produce hormones and help promote metabolic and sexual health - males have D receptors in the testis Another study, published in the journal Hormone and Metabolic Research, researchers found that 3332 IU’s of vitamin D3 was enough to significantly reduce sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) count Boron Increased levels of sex steroids have been demonstrated in both men and women after boron supplementation. Boron is a rare trace-mineral that is vital for various functions in the human body. It originates from space matter like meteoroids, and can be found in small amounts in the earth’s soil. Boron has been proven to be an important trace mineral because it is essential for the growth and maintenance of bone; greatly improves wound healing; beneficially impacts the body’s use of estrogen, testosterone, and vitamin D; boosts magnesium absorption; reduces levels of inflammatory biomarkers. Study One study, in Journal of Trace Elements in Medicine and Biology, found that otherwise healthy men noted that acute supplementation of Boron, over the period of 6 hours trended to increase free testosterone (+14.7%) and DHT (+9.9%). Eight healthy male volunteers attended the laboratory on three occasions (days 0, 1 and 7). On the first day (day 0), a blood sample collection at 8.00 A.M was followed by ingestion of placebo with the breakfast. On the next day (supplementation-day 1), similar procedure was followed by ingestion of a capsule containing 10mg of boron. On both occasions blood was collected every 2h for the next 6h. Subjects were requested to consume a capsule of 10mg boron every day with their breakfast, and on the day 7, the blood collection was carried out at 8.00 A.M, again. Boron in plasma increased significantly following hours and weekly consumption. Six hours supplementation showed a significant decrease on sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), high sensitive CRP (hsCRP) and TNF-α level. After one week (in samples taken at 8.00 A.M, only), the mean plasma free testosterone increased and the mean plasma estradiol decreased significantly. Dihydrotestosterone, cortisol and vitamin D was elevated. Also, concentrations of all three inflammatory biomarkers decreased after supplementation. After 7 days of supplementation, the increase in free testosterone (28.3%) Simple Summation: A study published in the Journal of Trace Elements in Medicine and Biology had 8 healthy male volunteers supplement with 11.6 mg of boron taken daily for a week It increased free testosterone levels by 28% and SHBG count in serum also decreased significantly which probably explains the increase in free T (SHBG decreased after only 6 hours of supplementation) - estrogen levels dropped by 39% Also elevated levels of vitamin D https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2...
