What is a Bore Tide? The Alaskan Bore Tide Phenomenon

Alaska is an incredible state, filled with stunning landscapes and abundant wildlife. It is also home to one of the largest tide phenomenon in North America, called the bore tide, which is one of the biggest in the world. So what is a bore tide? It’s basically when the ocean tide meets a narrow inlet from a wide bay, resulting in a fast moving wave as the ocean counters the flow of rivers dumping into the inlet. There are about 60 locations in the world where this occurs, and Alaska’s can produce a wave up to 10 feet tall, traveling up to 15 miles per hour. The waves are most dramatic around a new or full moons when there are extremely low tides. After a short amount of time, the massive amount of ocean water dumping into the inlet creates a wave. This wave can sometimes get large enough where people surf on them. It’s important to remember to never go out onto the mud flats. The silt is thick and sticky and you can get trapped and drown as the tide comes in. This occasionally will even happen to animals or whales.
