Thresher sharks - The Whiptails of The Ocean

The oceans of the world are huge and expansive places, and across many of them, and are in many ways ecological deserts, covering over 40% of the earth's surface. This mostly comes down to subtropical gyres, which with their swirling expanse of nutrient-starved seawater, means that the growth of many key organisms like phytoplankton and zooplankton, which has further implications for larger marine life, including sharks. Still though, many animals still frequent these regions, and one of the most interesting and in many ways wacky of them all are a group of sharks, being the group I’ll be talking about today, the Thresher sharks. There are three currently known species of them, the bigeye, common and pelagic threshers, with some being more well known than others, but are all very fascinating and very cool in their own ways.
