Welcome to my channel, Space Remote Sensing and GIS! Today, I will discuss flood analysis using optical Landsat 8 data over Dubai for 2024. For this analysis, I used two datasets: a pre-flood image from January 1, 2024, and a post-flood image from April 21, 2024. I performed the analysis in ArcGIS Pro. Using ArcGIS Pro's Change Analysis tool, we can directly identify areas affected by the flood. First, select both the pre-flood and post-flood images, then choose the pixel-based change detection method. Next, select the Band Difference method, which is index-based. I chose the Modified Normalized Difference Water Index (MNDWI) to extract water areas. This method helps identify areas that had no water in the January image but show water in the April image, indicating flooding. After selecting the MNDWI, I processed the images, resulting in an index image highlighting the newly flooded areas. I then used supervised classification to differentiate between flooded and non-flooded areas, assigning 0 to flooded areas and 1 to non-flooded areas. Next, I converted the classified image into a polygon using the Raster to Polygon tool in ArcGIS Pro. Finally, using the Selection by Query tool, I extracted all the flooded areas as a shapefile. Additionally, I introduced a new tool in ArcGIS Pro under the SAR Analysis toolset called Extract Water. This tool can directly extract water from SAR images. I hope you find this video helpful.
