Meaningful Work: Marjolein Lips-Wiersma at TEDxInnsbruck

TEDxInnsbruck - Marjolein Lips-Wiersma - Meaningful Work Researcher, Author, Consultant and Trainer on Meaningful Work, New Zealand Marjolein Lips-Wiersma is one of the world's experts on the topic of meaningful work. In her role as academic she has spent the last 15 years talking to people of diverse occupations, cultures and ages to understand what makes their work meaningful. She has found that the existence and absence of meaningful work has a profound impact on all aspects of work behavior including motivation, ethics and leadership. As human beings we often forget to ask the big questions. Or we make them so big that they seem of little relevance to our daily lives. When we do ask a question about what we did that was meaningful that day, we may be pleasantly surprised. Because to be human is to be in search of meaning. If we find our work meaningful this is a big, if not the single biggest, influence on our motivation at work. It has many positive effects for ourselves, our organisations and the communities in which they operate. It is linked to well-being, a sense of dignity, active engagement, creativity and our ability to make a difference. It lifts us above the here and now and helps us ask "what really matters here"? When we do not find satisfactory answers to this question, or feel we can no longer act on what matters most, we disconnect from ourselves and from others. So, how do we keep meaningfulness present, how do we make it relevant and understood by others? How do we do this as individuals, but also together, as teams, and as organisations when language of efficiency so often dominates? In this presentation Marjolein provides a Map of Meaningful Work. It is simple but profound. It is based on solid research and age old concepts. People have found it easy to use. It speaks to you and helps you to understand what is meaningful for others. It does so in simple and direct language. You can speak about meaning in a practical, grounded, pro-active and professional manner rather than complaining "I don't see the point of this" which often has little effect. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
