Recorded at the London Microservices Meetup: https://www.meetup.com/London-Microse... Date: 14th of October 2020 Slides: https://speakerdeck.com/dimosr/shared... Event page: https://www.meetup.com/London-Microse... Follow us on Twitter! / londonmicrosvc --- The microservices architecture was born out of the need to reduce sharing, but is sharing always bad? In this talk, we will learn about shared-nothing architectures, their benefits and their pitfalls. The concept of a shared-nothing architecture is not new, but a lot of state-of-the-art systems make use of the basic principles behind it. We will revisit some of these systems and examine them under the lens of the shared-nothing philosophy, discuss how these systems can be useful in a microservices architecture and how they can be detrimental. Key takeaways: What is a shared-nothing architecture and the basic principles behind the concept What are some examples of shared-nothing architectures What are the pros and cons of a shared-nothing architecture and where do they fit in the context of a microservices architecture Dimos is currently working as a Software Engineer at R3 building the next-generation DLT platform, called Corda. Prior to that, he was working for Amazon, where he got the chance to develop and operate large-scale distributed systems without losing a single hair from the top of his head (yet). His main areas of passion are distributed systems, clean & elegant software and testing, but this list keeps growing alarmingly. He occasionally rambles at: https://dimosr.github.io/blog.
