Modern Romance is about online dating, sexuality, and love. It's half psychology book on our current state of dating, half comedic memoir by Aziz Ansari. Overall I really enjoyed reading the book, and in this episode of On Books I'll share with you the best highlights and quotes. The top five quotes from Aziz Ansari's Modern Romance: 1. On Marriage “I see people my age…getting married to people they’ve known for like a year and a half. A year and a half? Is that enough time to get to know someone to know you want to spend the REST of your life with them? I’ve had sweaters for a year and a half and I was like ‘What the fuck was I doing with this sweater?’” 2. On Online Dating “I once met someone who found his wife by using Match.com and searching— and this is a direct quote— ‘Jewish and my zip code.’…that’s how I would go about finding a Wendy’s.” 3. On Match.com "Match.com will bring more love to the planet than anything since Jesus Christ." [page 78] 4. On Finding Happiness “If you’ve held someone you love and watched three to ten hours of a critically acclaimed drama, you’ve experienced the peak of human happiness.” 5. On Texting "In her book Alone Together, MIT social psychologist Sherry Turkle convincingly makes the case that younger people are so used to text-based communications, where they have time to gather their thoughts and precisely plan what they are going to say, that they are losing their ability to have spontaneous conversation. She argues that the muscles in our brain that help us with spontaneous conversation are getting less exercise in the txt-filled world, so our skills are declining." [page 41] 6. On Finding Balance “Spend more time with people, less time in front of a screen, and—since we’re all in it together—be nice to people.” Blog and mailing list: http://www.castig.org Twitter: @castig ( / castig ) Facebook: /castiglione ( / castiglione ) Instagram: @castig ( / castig )
