Dajia Mazu (大甲媽祖) pilgrimage, one of the three major religious activities in the world, has a history of more than 100 years. More than 2 million people participated in the nine-day and eight-night pilgrimage, passing through 26 towns and more than 100 temples in Taiwan, with a total journey of 340 kilometers. Christmas mass, the Hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca) and Dajia Mazu pilgrimage in central Taiwan are listed as the world's three major religious activities. Mazu pilgrimage is not only an important folklore designated by Taiwan government, but also recognized by Discovery Channel as one of the top three most major religious events in the world. Mazu pilgrimage is held every year from end of February to early March of the lunar calendar at Zhenlan temple in Dajia Taiwan. It’s 340-kilometer hike back and forth is Taiwan's greatest pilgrimage. Dajia Mazu Pilgrimage is a nine-day, or eight-day festival held at Zhenlan Temple (鎮瀾宮), Dajia Town, Dajia District, Taichung City, Taiwan from the end of February to the beginning of March of the Chinese lunar calendar year. This date is determined annually. The fifteenth day of the first lunar month is the Lantern Festival. Dajia Mazu fleet goes back and forth, and the end point is Xingang Fengtian Temple (新港奉天宮) in Xingang Township, Chiayi County. The outbound stops include Changhua Nanyang (彰化南瑤宮) Temple and Shilo Vaccine Temple (西螺福興宮), and the return stops include Shiluo Foxing Temple (西螺福興宮)、 Baidu Dianan Temple (北斗奠安宮)、Changhua Tianhou Temple (彰化天后宮) and Qingshui Chaoxing Temple (清水朝興宮). The round trip is around 340 kilometers, it has a great go-around event in Taiwan every year. Mazu pilgrimage tour started on April 21st this year, departing from the Gate of main Temple except for snack stations along the way to serve meals during this route. It’s a very long hiking itinerary, requiring physical strength and perseverance, as a matter of fact, not everyone can complete the whole trip. And it can be called Taiwan's greatest religious event and pilgrimage. In 2010, this event was designated by the Cultural Affairs Commission of the Executive Yuan as "one of the important folk customs of the Republic of China's intangible cultural assets and folk customs". Dajia Zhenlan Temple holds a cup-throwing ceremony (擲茭為準) every year on the night of the Lantern Festival to confirm the time for this year's pilgrimage. The 2023 Dajia Mazu detour is scheduled to start on Friday, April 21st in the Chinese calendar at 11:05 in the middle of the night on March 3rd in the lunar calendar. The itinerary will last for 9 days and 8 nights, more than 26 counties and cities and travel through Taichung, Changhua, Yunlin, and Chiayi (台中、彰化、雲林、嘉義) four counties. Why must believers take this pilgrimage? "Dajia Matsu Pilgrimage" is not only an important folk custom designated by Taiwan, but also listed as one of the world's major religious activities in recent years by Discovery Channel. In Taiwan, a single religious group has the largest number of believers. According to unofficial estimates, Mazu believers make up more than 60 percent of Taiwan's population.
