Beginners Pranayama - Triangle Breath [10 min]

If you've tried my Box Breathing practice and found yourself running out of breath or anxious, the best thing is to scale back to a gentle practice such as Triangle Breath. Like Box Breathing, Triangle Breathing also falls into the category of a Whiskey Breath, meaning it promotes the parasympathetic nervous system, rest, digest, and relax. Key considerations: *This practice should NOT create breath hunger, nervousness, anxiousness, or discomfort *If you are pushing yourself to make the breath, not only will it not relax you, it can backfire and create anxiety When to practice: *Before bed (even in bed) *During periods of extremely high stress WARNING: do not practice while driving or operating machinery. Do not practice in or near water. Do not practice before or after ice bath / col therapy. Q: Why pinch and hold my nose? Can't I just hold my breath? A: Every serious breathing student (yoga, free-divers, apnea, etc) uses a pinched nose simply because it makes it easier to hold and stay relaxed. The pinch stimulates your mammalian dive reflex and calms your body. Q: Why the chin lock? A: The chin lock is unique to yoga, but extremely effective for any breathing student. When you lock the chin on retention, it stimulates your vagus nerve and helps to further relax the body. It's also an energetic seal for your breathing passageways and helps to close / seal things off. Q: Why ocean-sounding breath? A: I use ocean breathing in nearly every pranayama practice I do and teach. The oscillation of the resonant breath stimulates your vagus nerve and further relaxes you. There is some research that indicates it may increase your Nitric Oxide (NO) levels as well which helps to dilate your breathing passageways and vascular system. A: The left nostril corresponds with your parasympathetic (rest / digest) branch of your autonomic nervous system. Q: Why the weird hand position? A: This classic pranayama mudra is functional, not showy. It's a clean and useful position for controlling and pinching your nostrils. It's a little awkward at first, but you'll get the hang of it quickly. New to Breathing?
