Lesson 05 - Immanuel Kant and the Ought and Is of Noumena and Phenomena (PHL 231)

18th century philosopher Immanuel Kant departs from both ancient philosophers in the hope that the world of noumena and speculative studies men can discover truth and the modern argument made by Machiavelli and others that the immanent world of phenomena is defined by amorality. Kant, following Rousseau, argues that philosophy must and can be made moral. By grounding morality on a metaphysical understanding of human rationality and cognition, Kant aims to show both what by and large escapes our understanding of the noumonic world, and how the categorical imperative should shape our sense of duty within the world of phenomena.
